Major Grants Awarded to the MR Centre

We depend upon grants from the Medical Research Council, Wellcome Trust and other major health charities to support the research costs. National and international recognition for our work is important is increasing our chances of successfully competing for these funds.
The Newcastle University application for Specialist Biomedical Research Centre Status in Ageing was awarded as the only one of its kind nationally. This programme includes out work on dementia and brain ageing, diabetes mitochondrial disease, stroke and liver disease). The award of Specialist Biomedical Research Centre Status is of great importance to the Newcastle Biomedicine (the coordinated research efforts of the Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Trust and Newcastle University). The award marks it out as one of the few centres outside Oxford, Cambridge and London with Research Centre recognition.
MR Centre collaborates Professors Bushby and Straub on the MRC Centre for Neuromuscular Disorders (a project in association with Institute of Neurology, Queens Square).
Professor Turnbull’s MRC Centre for Brain Ageing and Vitality (£4.3 million) draws on the synergy between the exercise facility to be installed, CARU and the MR Centre and is a model for translational research in linking molecular and cellular research to in vivo investigation.
The Parkinson’s Disease Society Programme Grant awarded to Professor D Burns (£1.2 million) will involve extensive MR work as part of a coordinated clinical investigation.

Fellowships awarded include the RD Lawrence Fellowship of Diabetes UK and a senior MRC Fellowship. |
