NMRC History and Mission

The Newcastle Magnetic Resonance Centre opened in 2006 and has since acquired an international reputation for practically orientated clinical research. We are out to make things better for people with various conditions. The success is a consequence of its central mission – to develop and apply cutting edge MR physics techniques to important questions of human health. It is a unique research venture. A group of outstanding physicists has been assembled. By collaborating with leading clinical researchers in dementia research, diabetes, neurology, liver disease and other fields, substantial progress has been made even in the short time of operation.
Construction of the MR centre and installation of the first magnet required fundraising of £5.2 million. The target was achieved by generous support from several local charitable trusts, other charities, individual donation, OneNorthEast and the Strategic Research Initiative funding. The capital project was completed within budget.
The presence of the MR Centre on the northern part of the NGH site has been very effective in attracting other new buildings. In 2006 NewcastleUniversity took the decision to nominate the area as a third campus, and the related research groups have been brought here. This has created synergistic groups of people and facilities, with major advantages for the work of the MR Centre.
